On Tuesday 29 September 2026, A Seat At The Table welcomes Nobel Prize Winner Professor Katalin Karikó for a one-hour online webinar built for one reason: to show young Europeans with a STEM background what a serious career in science can look like, told by someone who reached the very top of hers.

For years, almost no one believed in her idea.

Katalin Karikó was convinced that mRNA could become medicine. Her field disagreed. She lost funding, titles, a lab. She kept going anyway. That stubborn idea became the foundation of the COVID-19 vaccines and, in 2023, won her the Nobel Prize.

Katalin Karikó is a professor at the University of Szeged in Hungary and adjunct professor at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, where she spent 24 years. With Drew Weissman, she cracked the problem that had blocked mRNA for decades: how to stop the body from rejecting it. That breakthrough opened a whole new class of medicine. From 2013 to 2022 she was Senior Vice President at BioNTech. Beyond the Nobel, her work carries the Breakthrough Prize, the Japan Prize, the Solvay Prize and the Lasker-DeBakey Award.
